Crowns and bridges are the most frequent dental restoration procedures in dentistry. They are the optimal way to restore a fractured, decayed, weak or missing tooth.

When it comes to understanding the crown and bridge procedure, it’s important to know that you have two different options to choose from. When a tooth can be protected, crowns are used to help regain the original form. In contrast, bridges are utilized if you’ve got a gap, or require extraction. Bridges and crowns are arguably one of the best and widely used tooth restoration procedures. They’re a perfect way to rebuild a decayed, missing, weak, or fractured tooth.

What are Crowns and Bridges?

When the teeth are decayed, damaged, or cracked, crowns may be required to fit onto them. It’s a permanent coating that fits above your original teeth. They’re made of gold, metals, or porcelain. Among the different types of crowns available, porcelain crowns have the best realistic appearance. They can reshape, realign, and whiten your current teeth and pave the way for a vibrant and healthy smile.

On the other hand, bridges are devices used to reinstate the space left open due to teeth removal. A standard bridge comprises a filler tooth (pontic) connected to two surrounding abutments (crowns). Once finished, the structure is placed into your mouth. If you don’t use bridges, gaps in your mouth where the tooth is missing can induce several teeth to move, leading to biting (occlusion) or/and jaw issues and periodontal disease. All in all, a bridge safeguards the wholeness of your current teeth and assists you in maintaining a healthy, vivid smile.

The Process

Bridges and crowns typically need two or three trips to Dr. Mario Garita’s clinic. Dr. Mario Garita will inspect the bordering teeth and the total number using an anesthetic on the first visit. Then, they will prep the nearby teeth by washing any remaining decay or plaque so that crowns can easily be fitted.

Dr. Mario Garita will make the mold of your teeth and forward it to the dental laboratory where the tailored impression is developed. The personalized mold will take two weeks at most to reach the dental clinic. In the meantime, you’ll be fitted with the treatment bridge/crown built from acrylic resin.

When you get back to Dr. Mario Garita’s clinic, our team will take out the treatment bridge/crown and change it with a permanent one. After that, the bridge or crown will be adjusted for the accurate fit and bite, and it will be bonded into your mouth permanently.
